What Should Dad Do During Labor and Delivery? How to Be the Support She Actually Needs

So, you’re about to become a dad—or a partner in the delivery room—and you’re wondering, “What should I actually be doing during labor and delivery?”
You’re not alone.
Most partners want to help. They want to be useful. But the truth is, without some real preparation, many find themselves standing on the sidelines, unsure of what to say or do when things get intense.
The good news? You don’t have to stay in the dark.
Here’s what your role really looks like during labor:
Be the Calm in the Chaos
Labor can be unpredictable and emotionally charged. Your calm presence is everything. Whether it’s offering a steady hand, helping with breathing, or just being fully present—your energy can anchor her when she needs it most.
Know the Stages of Labor
Understanding what’s happening—early labor vs. active labor vs. transition—helps you anticipate her needs. You’ll know when to encourage movement, when to help her rest, and when to advocate for more support.
Be Her Advocate
You’re not just there for emotional support—you’re also her voice if she’s too focused or fatigued to speak up. That means knowing her birth preferences and being ready to help communicate them clearly to the care team.
Offer Physical Comfort
Massage. Counterpressure. Rebozo work. These aren’t just nice extras—they can make a huge difference in how she copes with contractions. But they take practice to do well.
Support Doesn’t Stop at Birth
After baby arrives, emotions and exhaustion peak. Your support continues as she recovers, learns to feed, and adjusts to this major life transition. The more prepared you are, the stronger your bond will be.
So… how do you actually learn all of this?
You could try to figure it out from books or YouTube.
